Serpentine Bachelor’s Chest
Stunningly unique bachelor’s chest with serpentine front. Bachelor’s chests are rare by themselves. This one is only 34” wide which is exceptional. It is 32 ¾” tall, and 21” deep. However, the serpentine front puts this chest into a whole other bracket!
The front is flanked by chamfered columns. All of the feet are ogee bracket feet and the front feet conform with the curves of the serpentine shape to really make the chest pop. The mahogany used in the top is figured and beautiful. The finish has great age and a high sheen from years of waxing. This made photographing this piece extremely difficult. Please note it has a deep rich luster. Furthermore, the top drawer opens to reveal a fitted interior with an adjustable writing surface and 4 lidded compartments. All of the lids appear to be original along with their hardware. This chest even has a linen slide that conforms to the top. Only the drawer pulls appear to be replaced. The top does show some wear on the left side but that is to be expected from a great piece like this. The photographs make the wear appear much worse than it is. English. Circa 1775.
