Banded Bachelor’s Chest

A nice, mahogany bachelor’s chest. This chest has several things that really make it stand out. First, the size is amazing. It is only 21 ¼” wide and 19 ¼” deep. The height of 29 ¾” really makes this chest a versatile piece. It can be used in so many different spaces and in different ways within any home. Next, the top is banded and veneered. It is incredibly unusual to find an 18th century chest with a banded top. In truth, this is what first drew me to the chest. Third, the drawer configuration of 2 over 3 is very desirable in small chests yet rarely seen. Lastly, it has a linen slide! This is a nice featured that provided additional work space for folding clothes. Only two of the drawer pulls are not original (cast copies from an original). The escutcheon are replacements. Mahogany primary with English Oak secondary. England. Circa 1800.

As to the condition, we have fully restored this piece. The drawers work great. Please note I took a lot of pictures of the top of this piece. There are several old repairs that I clearly show. They are much more subtle when seen in real life. (Look at the picture of the entire top from the front left corner. It is fairly representative of the piece.) The most accurate picture for these old repairs is the one of the back right corner. The repair on the front right corner and surrounding area does not look how it is depicted in the picture in real life.  The flash from my camera highly accented any blemishes in the wood. All in all, it is a very good piece and a great buy at $2,695.
