Empire Sideboard

Empire Sideboard

A nice, mahogany, Empire sideboard with original backsplash. This piece has beautiful mahogany veneers used in the front and on the backsplash. There are three drawers above three doors. The scroll feet and columns are well executed but still a bit on the simple side. In addition, the outside two drawers have a beveled drawer front. All of this indicates a more rural point of origin. More than likely it was made by someone trained in an area like Norfolk or Richmond, VA who moved out to the country once their apprenticeship was completed. It is 54 ½” tall and 65 5/8” wide. The top is 21 5/8” deep but the columns make it a depth 24 5/8”. The top does have some shrinkage cracks which can be clearly seen in some of the pictures. They are stable and not an issue. Please note, photographing this piece was very difficult. The most accurate picture for color is the picture of the left side of the top. However, the color is a bit deeper and richer than depicted there. Most likely Southern. American. Circa 1845.
