Handkerchief Table

Handkerchief Table

A delightful, handkerchief table from the mid-18th century. Commonly called “corner tables”, these tables are beautiful in their simplicity yet very functional. This table has several desirable elements.

First, it is petite.  It stands 27 ¾” tall but only requires a 24” corner. Second, the top is double hinged. This allows it to be “lifted and opened” while the drop leaf is down. Inside is a compartment that would have been used for storage. Originally, the hidden compartment would have been locked but that mechanism has been missing for a very long time. Lastly, this table appears to retain its original surface. While it does show some wear and tear due to age and use, it has a wonderful luster that is only brought about with years of love and waxing. All in all, this is a wonderful table that can be used in a number of different ways. Mahogany. Queen Anne. Circa 1760.
