Harrisonburg, VA Long Rifle

A delightful example of a Virginia long rifle. Made by Alexander McGilvray of Rockingham County, Virginia, this rifle is one of his later rifles. In excellent condition, this piece was probably made in the late 1840’s.The stock features a wonderfully engraved patch box on one side and a deer and hunting dog on the other. With an overall length of 59”, this rifle is original and has not been altered. McGilvray was known for his high quality workmanship and his rifles are sought after by collectors. He was associated with George Peterman of Botetourt County, VA before moving to Harrisonburg and setting up shop. He was born in 1798 and died in 1854,  Harrisonburg, Virginia. Circa 1850
