Irish Candlestand

“Wow!” The first word that comes to mind when one sees this table for the first time. From the top to the pedestal to the feet, this table has it all. Made somewhere around 1775, this table is the epitome of high style and taste. The top has 8 panels of bookend matched, flame mahogany veneers on a solid mahogany board. This mahogany pattern really grabs the eye. The cabinet maker then surrounded it with an elaborately, carved dish top. While the top is in great shape, one can tell the edge has had a bit rougher life. Our best guess is that the table fell over several times. While the fancy edge is repaired, it isn’t obvious unless one goes looking for it.  Next, comes the pedestal. Look at the fluting and carved baluster…they are amazing! The proportion and quality of the work is simply, stunning. Following the trend downward, one finally notices the complex, carved ball and claw feet. Look at the knuckles on the toes. It is wonderful! Even the top does tilt up. All of the fancy characteristics point to an Irish origin. The top of the table is 22” by 21 ¾” and it is 27” tall. It has been refinished by us with the underside of the top being left alone. Overall, this is a wonderful table that manages to grab the eye. Yet, it retains a gentle softness to it that is summed up in one word, “elegant”. Most likely Irish, Circa 1775.
