Kutani Sculpture

Kutani Sculpture

An amazing Kutani sculpture of the Japanese god, Oniwaki. Kutani statuary is rare and this piece is exceptional. The fish is standard Kutani style and color. However, Oniwaki has a distinctive Imari look to him. Oniwaki lived at the temple Hong Raijin. While he is there he finds the giant carp that had eaten his mother. Carving revenge, Oniwaki battles and kills the giant carp. Look closely and one can see a smile on his face! Standing 11.5” tall, this is an impressive piece. It is 10.5” wide, and 7” deep. This piece is in excellent condition with a very, shallow chip in the bow on Oniwaki’s head. Japanese. Circa 1890-1910.
