Large “1721” Pewter Plate

Large “1721” Pewter Plate

A stunning, deep pewter plate. With a diameter of 14 5/8”, this piece is a show stopper. However, what really makes this piece is the story behind it. First, look at the inscription on the front. It reads “Rachel Parsons Northampton Mass 1721”. It is marked on the back by the maker, John Benson, London. He was in business between 1740-1752. It is reasonable to assume this piece was made to celebrate Rachel’s birthday in 1721 and was a gift. The story behind this piece is really wonderful. We have the family history, where and why they moved. One of her family had to move away from Northampton due to an accusation of witchcraft too! All in all, this is a great piece with and even better story!
