Merrimac and Monitor

Engraving of the Merrimac and Monitor Naval Battle, Circa 1875

A rare engraving of the battle between the Merrimac, or Virginian, and the Monitor outside Newport News, Virginia.  This clash of the iron clods was the first “modern” naval battle in the world.

The battle resulted in a draw which in effect was a defeat for the South as the harbor remained blocked.  The engraving has been hand colored and is 15 3/4″ wide by 13 1/2″ tall.  Circa 1875.
