Richmond, VA Cast Iron Bench

A beautiful, cast iron bench made in Richmond, Virginia. Made by the famous James Carr, this garden bench is the classic fern design. Most people don’t realize James Carr invented the design right here in Richmond. He began producing beautiful ironwork before the Civil War. However, it wasn’t until after the war that his work became more popular. Besides the beauty of the piece, what is exceptional is that it is signed. Carr was very unusual in that he signed many of his pieces. This is only the second time we have ever had a piece of his to sell. This particular bench is approximately 39 ¾” wide, 29 ½” tall, and 29” deep (back to front feet). It is 19 ¼” deep back to front of seat. This bench has been restored. The bench appears to have been damaged at some point, most likely a tree limb. The overall frame is in good order but the seat and one arm had to be repaired. We had all of the pieces except for one leaf in the back. It has been expertly restored, powder coated, and is ready for use again! If you have every wanted a piece of Richmond history, here is your chance! Circa 1875.
