CSS Merrimack vs. USS Congress
A rare engraving of the Merrimack, or Virginia, versus the USS Congress and other ships. It is titled “The Last of the Wooden Navy”. This battle occurs the day before the Monitor arrives at New Port News, VA for their famous battle. On this day March 8, 1862, the Virginian was the most powerful naval ship in the word. That changed with the famous battle the following day. This particular engraving is visible at 23 5/8” width and 13 5/8” in height. The frame is 31 ½” wide and 21 1/8” tall. The frame is an Ogee Empire frame and dates around 1845. The print is in acid free paper. The original painting was done by George Bagby Matthews. We believe the signature is a descent of George’s. Overall, it is in very good condition with minimal foxing. The color is original. Circa 1900.
