A beautiful, Federal gaming table made out of mahogany. This elegant table is a Federal style table with just a bit of French flair. To start off with, it has the classic hairy paw feet. The top is a classic shape with pinched rounded corners. It is a bit larger than usual, especially at the width. It is 39 7/8” wide. This is a good 4” to 5” wider than most. To balance out the additional width, it is a tad bit deeper at 19 ¾” when the top is closed. When the swivel top is open, it is 39 ½” by 39 7/8”. It is the regular 28 7/8” in height. The mahogany is in pretty and in great condition. The top is all one board too. However, it is the 4 part pedestal that really makes this piece stand out. The four “pillars” are soft and curved with reeding….all very French. One needs to keep in mind that styles were changing when this was made. Empire (French) influence was coming into the market and it would not be long before it took over from the Federal style and became the predominant style. This piece is a great example of that transition. There is an ever so slight discoloration in the top that can only be accounted for by extensive use while open. At some point in its life, this piece was the hub of the household…or the just loved to play games. All in all, it is a beautifully elegant table that can be used in a multitude of ways. American. Circa 1825.
