“Magnificent” just doesn’t do it when this piece is seen in person. “WOW” falls short too. “Masterpiece”, now that seems to fit.
This stellar sideboard is made out of Honduras mahogany. It features a serpentine front and an inverted bow on the sides. As a side note, this is the only sideboard we have ever owned with sides like this. Additionally, the top tracks the front and sides too! It is a full size sideboard at 71 7/8” long, 25 3/8” deep, but only 36 ¾” tall. The scale coupled with the shape is nothing short of “perfect”. Most sideboards would add a little inlay and stop there. Not this one!
The next feature, perhaps the first one seen, is the front and its bookend matched, flame mahogany veneers. They literally “roar” off the drawer fronts when seen in person. It’s only now one starts to notice all of inlay work and there is a LOT of it. Additionally, there is banding and inset inlaid, oval medallions on the legs. It even has spade feet. What else could one ask for? Check out the top!
The top has rosewood banding on the edge and top. It has herring bone inlay that traces the same shape of the top too. However, it is the center of the back of the top that steals the show. There is half of a medallion that features acanthus leaves overtop of pointed spikes. Upon closer examination, the leaves even have veins in them. This is nothing shorty of amazing. Truly aw inspiring. At this point, one may think it could get no better but this glorious sideboard has one surprise left. Go back to the center, front and look at the spandrels. They are inlaid to match the top! “Incredible!” English. Circa 1790.
