Brilliant 21″ Imari Charger

“Sensational”…”Unbelievable”…or a long whistle are but a few of the sounds that may escape one’s mouth when first viewing this charger. This piece is nothing short of stunning.  First, it is in excellent condition with minimal wear to the outer edge of the charge.Second, its size is nothing short of “grand”. It measures a whopping 21 1/4″ in diameter! However, all of this pales when compared to the brilliance of the color and the quality of the artistry. Look closely at each panel. The flowers on the right grab the eye but it is the peacock under them, with the hint of red in its tail feather, the holds the eye. Then there is the left panel. There is just something about the way the artist painted it. One may think it is sunset or sunrise night, it matters not. For this piece plays with light and dark and one can feel the candles, movement, and life inside the great home. Something is happening…. One can almost see the light flickering. As brilliant as the blue, white, and gold are it is the deep iron red that steals the show. It is used sparingly throughout the piece so the visual impact is tremendous without being overpowering. 

So, where is this piece from. Well, it is definitely from Japan in the Arita region. I suspect it is from Imari but it could be from just outside that area as well (Imari is a city inside Arita). Regardless, this piece is nothing short of “awesome”. Circa 1890.
