“WOW!” It just doesn’t seem to cover it the first time one sees this piece. “Incredible, Stunning, Unbelievable” maybe those are more like it.
Made out of solid cherry and featuring bird’s eye maple banding and drawer fronts, this piece commands attention. The bird’s eye maple is surrounded in mahogany banding. The sharp color contrast is nothing short of bold and it really does make the entire piece. Overall, the piece is 6’ 11 ½” tall and only 39” wide and 19” deep. This petite size allows this piece to go anywhere yet the boldness of the wood lets it fill up a larger space while maintaining its elegance. The pagoda style top is lovely and totally original. It features inset panels of walnut and a bit of string inlay at the center. The upper doors are of the classic glazed door design. Behind them rest 3 shelves. The upper lower interior originally had eight vertical panels but only the outer two remain. A most unique feature of this piece are two drawers under the upper doors. Check out how the drawer fronts make it look like it is only one drawer when it is two! The lower portion of the desk features a wonderful pull out writing surface which opens to reveal a beautiful interior and inlaid prospect door. The interior drawers have high quality scratch beading that looks like cockbeading. Meanwhile, the outside drawer fronts all have cockbeading. This piece has been restored many years ago. There are several repairs on the right side of the case. One is visible on the right front stile but it is extremely difficult to see. Meanwhile the brass is all replaced. However, the drawer pulls are accurate to what would have been on it originally. The feet are original as well. Interestingly, there is poplar, white pine, and chestnut secondary woods present. Attributed to extreme Eastern Connecticut or Western Rhode Island. Circa 1790
