“What a table!” This may be the thought that comes to mind when this table is seen for the first time. Ornately carved, this table has a lot going on in a small package. The first thing one notices is the carved, applied fretwork on the front. To say it is bold, is an understatement.Next, the gadrooning along the edge of the top steps out and commands attention. Lastly, the beaded edged legs finish off this complex effect called, Chinese Chippendale. Chinese Chippendale is an ornate style developed by Thomas Chippendale after he was exposed to Chinese export porcelains and other material culture. This “effect” is bold, complex, and absolutely stunning. In this case, we take all of this complexity and put it on a card table that is actually a bit smaller than most. It is only 30” wide, 14 5/8” deep, and 29 ¾” tall when the top is closed. This is petite! To top all of this off, the right side, slides open to reveal a “secret” drawer. “WOW!” Who says great things can’t come from small packages? Overall, the table is in great condition. The finish appears very old, and could be original. Of course, there is a bit of wear and tear on the beaded edges and carvings but one would expect that of a piece this old. The only repairs are pictured below. There is one on each of the back corners of the top when closed and one on the back right corner when opened. The primary wood is mahogany with the top most likely being San Domingo mahogany. English Oak is the secondary wood. English. Circa 1765.
