A most unusual, Empire dining room table with split pedestal. This early extension table has a lot going for it. First, there is the beautiful wood graining on the top and the wonderful luster. This table has been loved and cared for with lots of waxing. The hours of waxing have given it a glow that is spectacular. The base is covered in flame mahogany veneers. While in good shape it doesn’t have quite the luster that the top does nor should it. Let’s be honest, how many times a year does a person wax a table base? Next, it retains all of its original leaves. Each one is a different size. Overall, the table is 51” wide and 107 3/8” long, and 28 1/8“ tall. The leaves measure in width 23 3/8”, 21 ¼”, and the last one is 11 ¾”. A small leaf like this is call a “half” leaf. It was designed to give even more flexibility to the size. With no leaves it is 51” round. Finally, there is the open split pedestal. As one can see, the bases and their legs are most unusual. The legs have a wonderful cabrio bend ending in a scroll foot. There is a “base shelf” that when pushed together “house” or contain the 2 center legs. I have only seen 2 other tables with a similar base. The base is full-fledged Empire. The finish is definitely old but the luster is fantastic. There is age appropriate wear on the table. All in all, it is a lovely table. Empire. American. Circa 1845.
