Inlaid Chest on Chest

Inlaid Chest on Chest

This is a nice, mahogany chest on chest. What makes this piece rare and desirable is the inlay on the drawer fronts. Typically, chests on chests are plain. The better ones may have some nice fret work on the top and some columns on  the sides. This one has fluted, chamfered columns on the upper and lower case. However, it is all of the inlay that really makes it pop! Each drawer has string inlay and the drawer fronts are two toned. Outside the inlay, the mahogany is stained dark and the interior is the natural color of the wood. This two tone affect is totally original. To top it off, look at the cornice and one will see an incredibly detailed inlay pattern. The feet are original. Lastly, most of the hardware is original.  What few pulls that are not, were copied from the original. It stands 6’ 4 ¼” tall, 44 3/8” wide and 22” deep at the cornice. All in all, this is a great piece, pleasing size, and is ready to go. English Oak secondary. Circa 1780.
