We are very excited to offer this beautiful marine barometer. It is made out of rosewood and it has great carvings from its top to the bottom. A marine, sometimes called a gimbal, barometer was designed to mount on the interior of a sailing ship. They were the only “scientific instrument” that could help predict the weather. Typically, they were attached in the captains quarters due to their expense and delicate nature. This particular example retains its original gimbal mount and features an “improved sympiesometer”. A sympiesometer was designed to measure the barometric pressure but they were notoriously delicate. Thus they became more of a verifying device than an accurate reading. Overall, this piece is in phenomenal condition and is ready to go. It does work but the readings are “consistently inaccurate”. The wood board in the back was custom made for it and looks great with it. Overall, the barometer is 38 3/4″ long and the back board is 46″ long by 6 1/5″ wide with beveled edges. Together, they project out from the wall 13.5″. It is signed and made by David Heron, Glasgow Scotland. Most likely made in the late 1650’s-1863.
