(Long whistle)….well, that’s what occurred in our minds when we first saw this.
This is a beautiful vanity with its original marble top. It is either French Empire or Neoclassical depending on one’s view. Our view…WOW! It is covered in a beautiful, rich mahogany veneer with applied ormolu decorations. Those decorations are made out of brass but are gilded in gold. Look at the details. It is simply incredible. The oval mirror is original and shows some silver coming through. The goose necks on the arms of the mirror are beautiful and points toward heavy French influence. Everything about this piece screams early 19th century. However, it is not. Due to the way it is built and the oxidation of the wood, it was made around the turn of the 20th century. It is 32″ wide, 16 5/8″ deep, and 52 1/2″ tall at the mirror. The distance from marble to floor is 29 3/4″. The marble does have a ring mark on the back, right corner. However, this did not cause us to pause at all before we acquired it. Just sit a small item on it, and no one will ever see. To be clear, everything is original about this piece. All in all, this is a magnificent piece. American. Circa 1900.
