Pair of Occasional Tables

A lovely pair of Victorian occasional stands with heavy Empire influence. There is so much to like about this pair of tables that it is hard to know where to start!

First, they are painted in black and have beautiful hand painted decorations. Look closely and you will see that they are some variation in color and design but there is no doubt the same hand did all of the work.  Next, look at their overall shape. From the Empire scroll feet to the unusually shaped top, they are a sweet and a match. However, the tops are what steal the show. Beautifully inset with large pieces of Mother of Pearl the tops are simply…WOW! We believe the tops are layered with paper mâché which is what the decorations are inset into. (If one wants to really “use” these tables, we would recommend a custom piece of glass cut for each one.) Each table is a nice petite size at 14 ½” in diameter and 22 ¼” tall. (One stands a 1/4” taller) Found in the Albany, New York area, we suspect they may have been made locally there. All in all, they are wonderful pieces. Circa 1860-1880
