“Wow, what a piece…” These may very well be the first thoughts that come to mind when viewing this piece for the first time. First and foremost, this piece is period and it is “right”.However, it is the size that absolutely steals the show. It measures a standard 72” long and is only 23 7/8” deep and 35 ¾” tall with an additional 11 ¾” backsplash. Yes, you read that right…35 ¾” tall! Although, the goodness that is this sideboard does not stop at it size.
Visually, it is Regency, not Empire, since it is English. The carvings and figured mahogany really pop off the piece. There are nice carvings on the backsplash that give the piece a wonderful sophistication it would not have otherwise. The finish does appear to be original and has a delightful warm glow to it. There is an old stain under the center part of the backsplash on the top (see pictures). Interestingly, it separates into 3 parts which makes moving it very easy. The top portion has 3 concealed drawers. The pedestals each have a door. The right side has a shelf and a deeper cellaret drawer. The left side has 3 shelves with 2 pullout tray/drawers. Mahogany with English Oak secondary. English. Circa 1845.
Please note that this piece is not easy to photograph. It is even prettier in person.
