Portraits of George and Martha Washington

A beautiful pair of portraits featuring George and Martha Washington on glass. Both are beautifully done and in excellent shape considering their age and that they are on glass. People don’t understand the difficulty in painting on glass. It is complex and extremely difficult because one has to paint backwards. The details go first. Additionally, one must paint right to left instead of the typical right to left. To find artist who could do this was rare. This pair were either produced in the far East or likely by William Matthew Prior (1806-1873). Prior was born and trained in Maine but moved nearby to Boston, Massachusetts where he was prolific in this medium. Either way, they are stunning! The frames measure 25 1/2″ by 21 1/2″ and have some gold leaf loss to them.  The sight measurement for each is 23 1/4″ x 19 1/4″. Of course, there is some minor paint loss but they are in excellent condition overall. The frames do appear to be original thus I lean them being from Boston by Prior. Mid 19th century.
