Scottish Tall Case Clock

A beautiful mahogany tall case clock, or what is commonly called a grandfather clock. Made just outside of the heart of Edinburgh in Canongate, this clock carries the class and quality that made Edinburgh furniture so well known.Overall, the case is a classic Scottish design with fuller proportions and fuller waist and bonnet. The bonnet features two full columns and the original painted panels just under the broken arch. The clock does not appear to have had finials originally. The face is a brass dial with nickel plating. The dial is signed “J Hall Canongate” but after some research we believe the “J” is actually a “T”. Thomas Hall of Canongate is a listed and known clock maker. Note the fantastic engraving on the face. It really is striking.

The waist has flanking full columns. Meanwhile, the base has chamfered columns. The inlaid pattern of light and dark is repeated throughout the clock from the bonnet down to the base. The feet do appear to be original. The 8 day clock works and case have been fully restored. It stands 7’ 8 ¼” tall, 24 ½” wide, and 11 ½” deep. All in all, it is a pretty clock and is ready for a new home. Scottish. Circa 1780.
