Serpentine Front Sideboard

A striking, Hepplewhite sideboard with extensive inlay work. It is impossible to miss all of the incredible inlay work on this piece. One cannot help but start with the inlaid fans in the corners and under the main drawer.Work like this demands attention. Upon closer inspection, one comes to appreciate the delicate string inlay, much of which highlights rosewood accents. Interestingly, the sideboard appears to feature two different species of rosewood. One is used in the banding accents while a different one is found inserted in on the legs. Combining the variety rosewoods and inlay really makes a statement. Eventually, the eye drifts to the top and one realizes the top is inlaid and banded as well! It is only now that the rest of the piece comes into focus. This piece is only 59 ¾” wide, 37 ½” tall, and 25” deep in the middle. What an incredible size! Last but not least, the legs are tapered and have spade feet. Made out of mahogany with mahogany veneers, this piece is beautiful. English. Circa 1800.
