This is a lovely San Domingo mahogany, slant front desk. The first thing one notices is the serpentine front. It is beautiful! Following the front, the ogee bracket feet and carved shell relief on the base stand out nicely. Once the fall board is lowered, one can see the interior with a matching shell carved into the center top drawer. The finish appears to have some age to it and possesses that warm luster everyone loves. The desk is 43 ¾” tall, 44 ¾” wide at the feet, and it is 22” deep at the feet. The writing service is 31.5” tall from the floor. The hardware is replaced and there is a long, well executed repair along the bottom edge of the fall board. Considering how heavy the fall board is, one can safely assume that the board was lowered without its supports being pulled out. The repair is strong and not as noticeable in real life when compared to the pictures below. It was most likely made in Massachusetts but Rhode Island cannot be ruled out. Chippendale. American. Circa 1780.
