A rare, Southern, mahogany candle stand. Rare just doesn’t do this table justice nor does “Awesome!”. First, this table is a Queen Anne table from the 18th century. It is made out of mahogany and has poplar secondary wood. The poplar confirms the table is American beyond a doubt.It is rare to have any blocking on a candle stand that isn’t the primary wood but it does happen. However, it is the main staft, or column, that points to the South! This streamlined, cylindrical, slightly graduated column is almost certainly a Southern characteristic. It really makes the table pop. Furthermore, it is lovely with a dish top. This makes us think Virginia is a strong possibility. As one can see, the dish top does have a bit of damage a long, long time ago (see pictures below). The reason for this damage is that the table was top heavy and was probably knocked over multiple times. The repairs are old. We surmise this is why someone carved out the underside of the bulbous feet and poured lead into them. This gave the table enough weight to the bottom to balance out the top and increase its stability significantly. Look closely at the “raised leaf” on the knees of the legs. There is a slight residual amount of paint left. It is very hard to see but at some point a folk art style star was painted there too. Lastly, the table does have a great spider on the base. The top is 18.25” in diameter and table is 27.5” tall. American, Southern, probably Virginian. Circa 1780.
