Square Wheel Barometer

An incredibly rare, wheel barometer with a square dial. Feel free to “ooh and aw” or laugh because, yes, this is a “square wheel barometer”. Barometers of this shape were made right at the beginning of the wheel barometer era, late 1790’s up until 1803.These were the very first to feature the long stem and a barometer at the bottom (or top) and a long thermometer on its neck. This is the only one we have ever had the privilege to see much less own. It has been fully restored and is functional. It has a presence that is…difficult to explain. It grabs the eye and doesn’t let go. Perhaps it is the square dial instead of the round or the clean and uncluttered dial. The mahogany is certainly pretty enough. Made in England, likely London, the dial is unsigned but original. It is 39 ¾” long and 10 ¾” wide with a 9” square face. One is likely to never see another in a home or a museum.  All in all, this piece is nothing short of captivating. Circa 1790-1803.
