Virginia Sideboard

An elegant Hepplewhite sideboard with five drawers. Made in the early 19th century, this piece has an 18th century feel. It is simplistic in form but has beautiful string inlay across the front, inset accents at the top of the legs, and cuffs near the bottom of the feet. The fine string inlay work is mirrored on both sides making it appear to have two drawers on either side. However, the right side has only a single, large cellaret drawer.

What really sets this piece apart are the woods used in its construction. It is made out of yellow pine with a mahogany veneered exterior. We have done a lot of research on this. Yet, we have not been able to find anything else like it. Our best guess is that this piece was made by an English trained cabinet maker fresh off the boat where he was use to veneering everything. We imagine this was probably one of only a few pieces he did this way before changing his technique to using solid mahogany. Overall, this sideboard has been repaired and refinished at some point in the past. The pulls are a correct but a later replacement. It is a great size at 72 5/8” wide, 21 3/116” deep, and 41 5/8” tall. American. Circa 1810.
