A beautiful, solid cherry chest of drawers. This piece has a lot more going on than one sees at first glance. Obviously, there is the inlayed leaf and vine work on the top front edge. This jumps out and is the first thing one notices.Next, each of the drawers have pretty string inlay. The contrast between all of the inlay and cherry is delightful. Going on, the base has a nice apron on all three sides with a thick band of inlay at the top of the base. It’s at this point one starts to notice the little things. The cherry wood used in the front and sides has an unusual pattern to the grain. There isn’t a name for it other than “lovely”. Finally, one will notice the fine inlay on the vertical stiles. As nice as that is, it’s what is between them that is so cool. The maker put walnut! Yes, walnut is between the fine inlaid lines. There are several pictures that showcase this off below. The only “issues” with the chest is the small amount of shrinkage of the top on the left side. It creates a bit of space between the top left edge and the trim attached to it. (It is pictured below.) The pulls are in the original holes. They are definitely old and could be original! Due to how the back is installed, the inlay, and overall look this piece is probably West Virginia, or possibly eastern Kentucky. It is 40 ½” tall, 42 5/8” wide, and 20 ¾” deep. American. Circa 1850.
