Pair of Pembroke Tables
Beautiful doesn’t even begin to describe these tables. Made out of solid San Domingo Mahogany, these pembroke, or pembrooke, tables are a knock out. The plum pudding San Domingo tops are stunning. This rare cut of San Domingo mahogany was only used on the best pieces. Once the eye stops being mesmerized by the effects of the plum pudding, it drifts to the beautifully reeded legs. The legs taper nicely and are sophisticated without being “over the top”. Next, the eye moves on to the drawer and the insert mahogany panels at the top of each leg. Lastly, one realizes that it is actually a matched pair of tables!!
Overall, these photographs do not begin to do the tables justice. This is one reason there are so many. The tops are in excellent condition and only show minor wear. Both tables have been refinished in the last 30 years. Each table measures 33” deep and 29” tall. When the leaves are down, the tables are 21 3/8” wide and 39 3/8” wide when open. Each drawer has cock beading. The knobs are replaced but in the original holes. A mark showing a similar knob was originally on the tables is visible when a knob is removed. The only true repair can only be seen on the underside of the table. One of the supports for a leaf has been repaired where it meets the case. There is a picture of this included in the group. Each table has 1 drawer and 1 false drawer. These tables were designed to sit out in the middle of the room and to be seen on any side. The secondary woods are poplar and white pine. Both tables appear to be made in New York City somewhere between 1805-1815.
One final note, we have been in business since 1961. This is the ONLY pair of American pembrooke tables we have ever owned. This is a truly “one of a kind” item.
